A strong and supported pharmaceutical industry is central to Ireland’s economic recovery (05/23/2010)
The Irish Pharmaceutical Healthcare Association (IPHA) has this morning launched the latest edition of its Pharmaceutical Healthcare Facts and Figures 2010 which presents an overview of healthcare in Ireland and the pharmaceutical industry both nationally and globally. Speaking at the launch, Dr Gerald Farrell, IPHA President stated: “It is clear from our latest edition of Pharmaceutical Healthcare Facts and Figures that the international research-based pharmaceutical industry’s footprint spans the entire island of Ireland. Every day the industry plays a vital role in the lives of Irish patients and consumers. When they fall ill – whether it’s with a cold or something more serious – it is likely that they will take a medicine or treatment to help them get better. Not only that, our industry has key role to play in helping the Irish economy get better too.

Pharmaceutical industry launches "Ten Principles on Counterfeit Medicines" to re-focus attention on this issue (05/12/2010)
The International Federation of Pharmaceutical Manufacturers and Associations (IFPMA), of which the IPHA is a member, today launched its "Ten Principles on Counterfeit Medicines", to re-focus attention on this issue and underline the international research-based pharmaceutical industry’s stance in the global fight against counterfeit medicines.

Pharmaceutical industry programmes to improve global health increase to 213 according to IFPMA (05/11/2010)
The International Federation of Pharmaceutical Manufacturers & Associations (IFPMA), of which the IPHA is a member, today published the latest edition of its “Developing World Health Partnerships Directory”. This resource, updated annually, documents the long-term public-private partnerships to improve health in developing countries which are supported by IFPMA member associations and companies*, almost all of which are on a philanthropic or not-for-profit basis. During the course of the last year, the overall number of active programmes undertaken by IFPMA members increased by 11, with 23 new programmes started and 12 completed. The disease area with the biggest growth was HIV/AIDS, with a net increase of 6 programmes, while programmes for Tropical Diseases increased by 3.

medicines.ie certified as trustworthy source of health information by the Health on the Net Foundation (05/06/2010)
medicines.ie, the medicines information online portal developed by the Irish Pharmaceutical Healthcare Association (IPHA), has been certified as a trustworthy source of health information by the Health on the Net Foundation (HON). Announcing the news, Ms Anne Nolan, IPHA Chief Executive stated that “Patients are being provided with increasing amounts of information from different parties with various objectives sent through multiple channels, particularly the internet. Technology is revolutionising how and when people access information.

European Vaccine Manufacturers support WHO Europe Immunisation Week’s goal of improving vaccination across the region (04/28/2010)
The European Vaccine Manufacturers (EVM), an EFPIA specialised-group of which IPHA is a member, welcomes and supports WHO Europe’s 5th European Immunisation Week (24 April to 1 May), which promotes the vaccination of every child to prevent diseases and protect life. This year the focus is on national immunisation efforts that will help meet the regional goal of eliminating measles and rubella by the end of 2010. In recognition of this important initiative, EVM is supporting an expert debate in the European Parliament focused on enhancing European vaccination, hosted by Karin Kadenbach MEP.

Pharmaceutical industry reports successful anti-counterfeit medicines verification pilot project (04/14/2010)
EFPIA – the voice of the research-based pharmaceutical industry in Europe – of which the Irish Pharmaceutical Healthcare Association (IPHA) is a member, today published the results of their product verification system pilot project. The pilot, held in Sweden between September 2009 and January 2010, successfully demonstrated that a medicine verification system at the point of dispensing, based on a two-dimensional data matrix, is both robust and effective in securing the medicines supply chain.

World TB Day - Industry announce that ongoing R&D to shorten treatment and address resistance (03/24/2010)
To mark World TB Day, the International Federation of Pharmaceutical Manufacturers and Associations (IFPMA), of which the Irish Pharmaceutical Healthcare Association is a member, has released its latest Status Report on "Pharmaceutical Industry R&D for Diseases of the Developing World". World TB Day, which marks the day in 1882 when Dr Robert Koch detected the cause of tuberculosis - the TB bacillus, raises awareness about the global epidemic of tuberculosis (TB) and efforts to eliminate the disease.

Letter to the Editor re "Tackling drug costs" Editorial (02/08/2010)
Madam, I wish to comment on some of the statements contained in your editorial “Tackling drug costs” of the 5th February. The spend by the Irish State on medicines is, actually amongst the lowest in Western Europe. According to the latest available OECD data, Health at Glance 2007, pharmaceutical expenditure per capita in Ireland was just $320 whilst the OECD average was $413 and countries like Germany ($498), Spain ($515) and France ($554) spent well in excess of this sum. Taking another measure, pharmaceutical expenditure as a percentage of healthcare expenditure, the OECD average for 2007 is 17.6% whereas the Irish figure is just 14%.

Lower price of medicines may save Irish patients up to €500 per year (02/01/2010)
The Irish Pharmaceutical Healthcare Association (IPHA) announced that with effect from today, the 1st February 2010, the cost of long established medicines would be reduced by 40%. IPHA, the representative body for the international research-based pharmaceutical industry in Ireland, has set up a special website on which patients can check to see if their medicines are listed, and the price reduction. The website – www.checkthelist.ie - carries a detailed list of all the medicines and their new, lower prices. A lo-call number – (1890) 876 700 – has also been set up. checkthelist.ie includes some of the most commonly prescribed medicines in the country.

EVM Contributes to Council of Europe Hearing on “The Handling of The H1N1 Pandemic: More Transparency Needed?” (01/26/2010)
European Vaccine Manufacturers (EVM) welcomed the opportunity to address today’s Council of Europe Health Committee hearing on ‘The handling of the H1N1 pandemic: more transparency needed?’ EVM was pleased to provide information on industry’s role in helping combat pandemic influenza, and sought to address many of the misunderstandings that exist regarding the pandemic planning process. The EVM rejected allegations of inappropriate behaviour by vaccine producers during the response to H1N1 influenza, and provided additional clarity in several key areas.
